Join author Gerard Gawalt for a discussion about his new book Terror on the Maine Frontier: The Ordeal and Triumph of John Gyles

Pemaquid’s John Gyles is the central character in this true, historical thriller. John was a son of English settlers when he was captured in 1689 during a French and Abenaki attack on Fort Charles and the English settlement at Pemaquid.

This book is an exciting, detailed account of the often horrifying life for Native Americans and European settlers on Maine’s frontier in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as Indians and Europeans battled for control of the Eastern District of Massachusetts. Young John was captured by a Maliseet warrior while working with his family on their farm land just west of the falls of the Pemaquid River. Some of the land that the Gawalts own near Pemaquid Falls in Bristol was part of the Gyles farm in 1689.
