Bremen Library to Host Solo Paddler Laurie Chandler
Laurie Chandler, Bremen resident and the first woman to solo paddle the Northern Forest Canoe Trail is the featured speaker at The Bremen Library in the first Thursday evening program of 2018. Laurie will talk about her adventure as well as Upwards her book about it on Thursday, January 18 at 7 pm. at the Bremen Library. The program is free and open to the public.
Laurie Apgar Chandler holds degrees in biology and forestry from Albright College and Duke University and worked for many years as a research forester. Her love for wilderness paddling blossomed after forty, when she moved to Maine with her two children. In the summer of 2015, at age 53, she became the first woman to solo thru-paddle New England’s Northern Forest Canoe Trail. She lives in Bremen, Maine and works at Great Salt Bay in middle school special education.
The inspirational adventure memoir Upwards, the story of her NFCT journey, is Laurie’s first book. Her dream, to travel 740 miles alone in a small canoe, was by no means certain. Along the way, she encountered challenges, expected and unexpected, that pushed her to the limits of her courage and endurance. Weaving faith, nature, and the abiding goodness of people into a captivating adventure tale, Laurie takes readers along storied waterways from New York’s Adirondacks to Maine’s Allagash, on the country’s longest mapped inland paddling trail.
For more information about the program please call Bremen Library at 529-5572.
